So, a few weeks ago
now I decided I wanted to give the 365-day drawing challenge a serious attempt
. I want to do this both to get back into practice, and also for the undeniable self-exploration effects, similar to journal-writing and self-critique. However my plans have been put on hold due to the crushing workload of a 2-week intensive Uni subject I decided to take on, and also induction sessions for being a mentor for yr11 & 12 students who are doing Uni subjects.
At times like this I wish I had discipline and time-management skills, which despite my calm nature and seeming affinity for most things, I lack both. I'm thinking that by doing more things consistently every day I will develop more time-management skills rather than doing all my study/assignments on one or two days then pretty much leading a different life for the rest of the time when I don't have lectures.
I've also been thinking more about fanart, which I historically love doing. I think my future fanarts will serve an additional motive, rather than simply being tributes. For example, the first week of the 365-day challenge I wanted to focus on Blizzard IP, and enter them all in to the recent BlizzHeroes contest. That would also have generated a lot more traffic to my galleries because the banner for the competition displays on the deviation forever and it is also always in the competition galleries when people look them up, but now it's too late. But other good uses for fanart are for upcoming games, to raise awareness/hype, or alternate designs for characters that actually contribute something to the character overall, rather than simply being a heavily copied image. I have also previously got my fanart urges out by colouring the linework of artists I really like --- examples in my 2014 gallery
--- which I think is also a valuable contribution to the character if no coloured version of that art currently exists. With this in mind, I'll probably be focusing a lot of future fanart on upcoming things, or further development of characters and themes. Some stuff I really want to work on is Street Fighter V, new DC characters like BlueBird
, some of the new alternative looks for Mortal Kombat characters such as Mileena
's Vampire outfit <3. I would also like to dabble in portraiture and watercolour landscapes again, I did some of that stuff in high-school and have done very little of it in the few years since, I'm more interested in the role of painting as a form of documentary now, so I'll likely make images of my city and surrounding land. But as far as the portraits go I'm probably more likely to look to models the likes of which can be found in Inked Magazine. I'll have to have a trawl through all my dA messages to find what permissions I have from people, I know there's a few I have never made use of yet that I would still like to.
Note* Don't worry, links in the journal are all in-house. I'm not trying to trick you into clicking on something silly or irrelevant.
- What are your motives behind the art you produce? Are you aware of any at all or are you just really impulsive with it?
- When life gets in the way of creative release behaviours like drawing, cosplay, photography, writing, making music, etc. what do you do about it? How do you keep some consistency about your creative routines?
